Artist Statement
Steve Zhang is a printmaker; his artworks focus on human nature and circumstances because he is interested in modern people’s behaviors and he is discovering what kind of person he is. His printmaking works have a graphic, sketchbook-like quality that includes characters and imageries derived from his interests deeply rooted in Pop art and traditional European printmaking art. His works tend to be on small traditional print like relief intaglio prints or large printmaking installation works. Yayoi Kusama’s works give him some inspiration for that. He realizes this is a new way to appreciate printmaking because most traditional print works are created in a two-dimensional form. The viewer does not need to be concerned about the environmental impact. But printmaking installation is different. The viewer must work around it and then collect information from different angles, considering how the environment works. Compared with the traditional ways, the concept of printstallation is powerful and playful.
