Liz Lis

Artist Bio

Liz Lis (b. Godbey) is an artist of mixed Western-European and Anishinaabe descent. Born and raised in the Bay Area, they are deeply inspired by the more-than-human life of the surrounding bioregions, from the oak woodlands and marshlands of their hometown, San Rafael, to the marine environment of Point Reyes National Seashore, to the flowering weeds around their current home in San Francisco. They have a Bachelor’s degree in English from Pomona College and are a candidate for a Master of Fine Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree in Visual and Critical Studies from California College of the Arts.

Artist Statement

Lis’s practice involves creating collages and paintings on paper and plywood, primarily using the mediums of watercolor, ink, and acrylic along with collage material like found photographs and fabric. Lis’s work depicts atmospheric environments and abstracted landscapes that seem to blend earth, water, and sky and at once take both a macro and a micro perspective. Their work raises questions about ecological future and the potential of transformation and regeneration that is found in the ‘natural’ world.
