Artist Statement
I grew up in or near the water all my life, and sailing has been one of my greatest dedications. The fluid forms in many of my sculptures merges the natural movement of wind and water to my career as a craftsman. With the intersection between art and craft as its foundation, my work develops through the manipulation of materials, expansion of processes, and craftsmanship. I treat every piece as an opportunity to highlight the use each individual component. One work creates potential for another in unexpected ways. In a series of sculptures, I explore the lamination process and the materials to apply it. I focus on movement through lines and curves, the weight and density of volumes from aggressively complex interwoven pieces to minimalist line and altering the viewer’s perspective using shadows and depth. Each piece ranges in scale from large installations to small wall mounted sculptures while remaining part of the group.
My art is a continuation of my craft removed from restriction. It continues to evolve while I uncover new potential for techniques and materials.
My art and practice continues to evolve through the honing of craftsmanship, developing of techniques; and developing the possibilities for the materials.
